Hats Off to Asian Rice Farmers

Very simple and elegant, the conical shape non is made from a single, round, palm leaf common in Vietnam (Borassus flabellifer). It has 16 concentric bamboo rings, one smaller than the other. The smallest ring or rib is at the top, and the biggest at the bottom. The palm leaf is laid flat and tied to the bamboo frame using strings from toddy-palm.

The usual diameter of non is around 40 cm.  Non,  which is 40 cm diameter is kept in place by a scarf tied inside the hat - usually made of silk.  Some hats are decorated with pictures of flowers or lyric poems.
