Rice Photo Gallery III Kazuko Tomiyama's 'Rice in Japan' Calendar (2003)
Newly planted rice fields
(Sakata City, Yamagata Prefecture)
Remaining snow on Mt. Chokai gently veils the peaks in this spring scene.
Centuries ago, during the Edo period, ships on the Mogami River, carrying rice
and safflower toward Kyoto, brought back the culture of the capital. Still
reflected, even now in these graceful fields are those old waterborne
connections. Last year, on the way to the National Tree Planting Festival, I was delighted
that this sight was still there to see. It recalls the labors of history: the exertion of constructing the Omachi
Weir and centuries of care for the channels that yet bring water for irrigation. | |
