Mathal or Patha
is worn by men while working in the ricefields. Gajari mathal is a large
wide conical hat, 36-37 cm in diameter. The pointed steep crown flares
into a wide brim. The exterior and interior layer are made of split bamboo
flesh and woven in open hexagonal pattern. Between layers are dried leaves
of gajari (Shorea robusta). The brim is reinforced with two bamboo
rings, with a secondary ring attached to the upper part of the brim. The
reinforcements are tied in place with a fine wire, and there is no
headliner. |
