Rice Photo Gallery III Kazuko Tomiyama's 'Rice in Japan' Calendar (2003)
Uwaba Plateau
(Hizen Town, Saga Prefecture)
Terraces descend to the seashore from high land that is invariably short of
water. Along the Genkai Sea are villages where they carry out rain-making
rituals when water in the upland irrigation cisterns runs low. Not so long ago, every person in the family, would combine to bear the burden
of carrying water up the highland paths. Every drop of water spilled was like a
drop of blood. Pumps to raise river water finally freed people from this labor.
Even so, this beautiful landscape, created and kept by years of arduous care,
depends also on exertion to overcome acreage reduction and the relentless import
of farm products. | |
